One Week Into Office Demo

One Week Into the Office Reset: Progress, Power Tools, and a Lot of Shims

It’s hard to believe it’s only been a week since we officially started demo on the office — because somehow, it feels like both yesterday and a month ago.

Last Monday kicked everything off, and I honestly wasn’t sure how quickly things would move. One thing I definitely didn’t expect?

👉 Menards having ALL of my cabinets and countertops in stock.

That little surprise turned into:

  • Two trips

  • A very full vehicle

  • And a whole lot of excitement

We weren’t planning on bringing everything home the same day… but when the stars align, you roll with it.

A 120+ Year Old House = Character (and Challenges)

Once demo started, things moved fast — and also not fast at all, if that makes sense.

My hubby:

  • Ran all new outlets

  • Pulled up every piece of trim

  • Filled countless holes

  • Painted everything

  • Laid the new floor

And let me tell you…

When your house is over 120 years old, nothing is level.

Nothing is square.

And everything requires shims.

So. Many. Shims.

📸 Flooring in progress (and the reality of old-house angles)

Flooring in progress. New floors going in — and all the fun that comes with a 120+ year-old house where nothing is level or square. Enter: lots and lots of shims.

There were definitely moments of problem-solving that didn’t make it into photos — mostly because our hands were full holding tools and questioning past building decisions from 1903.

Cabinets: Progress That Finally Looks Like a Room Again

After the floors came cabinets — and we ran into the same challenges all over again:

  • Uneven walls

  • Floors that slope just enough to matter

  • Cabinets that wanted to cooperate… eventually

But as of today?👉 All cabinets are officially installed.

And for the first time since demo started, the space actually feels like a room again instead of a construction zone.

Where We’re At Right Now

As I’m writing this:

Cabinets are in! After uneven floors, crooked walls, and more shims than we can count, the new cabinets are installed and the office is finally starting to look like a workspace again.

  • Walls are painted ✔

Tonight’s task list:

  • Staining and fixing all trim

  • Door frame and door touch-ups

  • Finishing details that make everything feel complete

Somewhere between all of this, my hubby looked at me and said:

“I think you’re trying to kill me.”

😂I promise — it’s just love and vision (and maybe a little chaos).

What’s Next

Next up:

  • Countertops fully set

  • Trim finished

  • Final details

  • Then comes the fun part — moving everything back in with intention

  • We’re not done yet, but for one week in?

I’m incredibly proud of how far this space has come — and extremely grateful for a husband who can do all of this (even if it’s trying his patience).

More updates coming soon 💜
